This week, Sam and Sarah talk about the latest news! We couldn’t get it up for Christmas Eve, but now it’s a special Boxing Day episode instead. Your beloved hosts discuss everything from what seems to be the first-ever enforcement of the ban on marijuana users owning guns, to shake-ups in the Trump Administration, to a THC-infused wine, and a Canadian proposal for vending machines that could help reduce overdose deaths. Turn on, tune in, and TWiD out!

News Updates:

Headlines:

  • Last week, a Chinese court sentenced ten people to death – primarily for drug crimes – and invited local residents to attend the sentencing. Open-air, public trials in China are rare, but have seen a resurgence in certain parts of the country
  • The Oregon Liquor Control Commission has announced that they conducted the first “minor decoy operations” where police attempted to get marijuana stores to sell to minors – and they found that 100% of the 20 stores would NOT sell to minors.
  • Following up on medical marijuana in New Zealand, the proposed legislation has received mixed reactions from patients and advocates because of the amount of discretion given to law enforcement.
  • A Colorado sheriff says that when he posted his SUV for sale on craigslist, someone offered to trade him 4 pounds of marijuana for it. He met up with the man and arrested him, as this is far more than the amount allowed for personal possession, and because it is still illegal to sell marijuana, which includes trading it for goods or services.

Forecast:

  • Prime Minister Justin Trudeau received flack this week after walking back his statements about marijuana legalization happening on July 1st. Instead, in a recent interview broadcast in Quebec, Trudeau said marijuana would become legal “next summer” rather than on any specific date.
  • Over the next few months, or perhaps throughout all of 2018, keep an eye out for news from Norway, where the government is making moves towards decriminalizing the possession of all drugs, like Portugal did in 2001. The issue is in the news because a majority of Norway’s parliament just announced support for a plan to implement such a policy. Though some misleading headlines are making it seem like a bill has been passed, this is not the case – it’s just a directive to the government to start putting this plan in motion. They still need to write a bill and get that passed.
