Chopped & Massacred Ft Barkey (Chop Farda)
Join us in this captivating episode of TCCO as we dive into the life and experiences of Barkey, also known as Chop Farda. Barkey is widely regarded as one of the early pioneers of UK Hip Hop media. Frustrated by the perceived decline of UK hip hop, he took matters into his own hands and founded Real Talk DVD, inspired by the influential Smack DVDs in the US. This marked the beginning of his journey to revitalize the UK hip hop scene.
From there, Barkey ventured into the digital realm by creating the hip hop website mediamassacre.net, rubbing shoulders with prominent figures like SBTV and Posty from GRM Daily. However, as life took its toll on Barkey and the UK hip hop scene began to flourish, he decided to step away from media and focus on his own music career, believing that his status in the game would ease his transition. Yet, he encountered unexpected friction and challenges along the way.
Undeterred, Barkey ventured into the world of fashion and launched his own clothing line called Chop, driven by his love for music and the desire to create apparel for his music career. However, new obstacles arose when other brands capitalized on the popularity of Afrobeat's rise, adopting similar names and logos despite Barkey having copyrighted his brand. These brands refused to back down, leaving Barkey in a David-versus-Goliath battle he couldn't afford to fight.
In this episode, Barkey shares his insights and experiences in the music media business, including a crazy day spent with young Spray and his rivalry with Posty from GRM Daily. He opens up about the trauma he endured, feeling that his efforts went unnoticed and that people took from him without giving proper credit.
Tune in to this thought-provoking and inspiring conversation as we unravel the remarkable journey of Barkey, a true trailblazer in UK Hip Hop media and a resilient entrepreneur.
