Sermon: Be Careful What You Wish For | Mark 6:14-29 | The Death of John the Baptist
Manage episode 429045869 series 2988477
King Herod’s lust, pride and probably his consumption of one too many drinks at his own party, made him speak words he would later regret. To impress his guests he made a vow to his niece who had just danced for him, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you. Up to half my kingdom.” There’s an old saying, “Be careful what you wish for.”
Herod’s niece didn’t know what to ask for, so she wished for what her adulterous mother wanted, namely, the head of John the Baptist on a platter. Caught in his own bravado and not wanting to look bad in front of his guests, Herod granted her wish. This wish of Herodias spoken through her daughter silenced the only one around who was telling her the truth of her sin. Getting what she wished for led to the continued impenitence and condemnation of herself and Herod. Be careful what you wish for.
