Sermon: Godly or Ungodly Traditions? | Mark 7:1-13 | Traditions and Commandments
Manage episode 436405527 series 2988477
A tradition is the transmission of customs or beliefs from one generation to the next. The true tradition of the church is the Gospel and all proper practices or traditions in the church teach the Gospel. For example, I was never officially taught to sing hymns as a young child.
This was a tradition passed along to me. I just watched my parents and brothers open their hymnals and sing, and I followed their lead. I distinctly remember reflecting on this in church one Sunday as a little boy. I can even tell you which pew I was sitting in at Our Savior Lutheran Church. I remember thinking that this was the only place at that point in my life where I sang anything. The hymns that I sang taught me the Word of God as they confessed the readings and sermon of that day.
Traditions such as singing hymns that confess the word of God are godly traditions since they focus on what Jesus has done and continues to do for the life of the world, for the life of you and me.
