Is justice truly being served, or are we watching an experiment in psychological torment? The trial of Richard Allen, who was found guilty of the 2017 murders of Abby and Libby in Delphi, Indiana, has raised unsettling questions about the treatment of prisoners and the limits of human decency. With only a fraction of the case evidence revealed, the defense's surprisingly abrupt close, and a whirlwind of speculation outside the courthouse, it’s no wonder many people feel stunned by the outcome. But perhaps the most shocking revelation is Allen’s alleged treatment in prison. Thirteen months of solitary confinement, knowing his mental state was unraveling, while a psychologist—later embroiled in her own ethical controversies—seemed more invested in case details than patient care.
Is this the new norm for handling high-profile cases with circumstantial evidence? Can we stomach a justice system that relies on breaking individuals without regard for truth or humanity? And if we can't, how far are we willing to go to change it?
