The global climate crisis has increased concerns over future sea level rise. The Philippines, with its long coastline, many islands, and low-lying areas, is home to numerous submerged island, coastal, and inland communities that are already experiencing the impacts of rising sea levels. In this episode, Pilvi Posio from the university of Turku is joined by Dr. Segundo Joaquin Eclar Romero from the Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines to discuss life in the submerged island communities in the country. These vulnerable communities are seeking to adapt to the inundation and continue their everyday lives, which are greatly affected by related problems such as lack of drinking water and sanitation, food security issues, decreasing farming land, and loss of homes and mobility. The episode introduces also various environmental and socio-political causes and effects of this complex phenomenon, and charts the future measures need to be taken to address it. Pilvi Posio is a senior researcher at the university of Turku in a project Finnish-ASEAN Academic Platform for Sustainable Development run by the Finnish University Network for Asian Studies https://www.asianet.fi/projects/ Doctor Segundo Joaquin Eclar Romero teaches at the Development Studies Program, School of Social Sciences and is a co-convenor of Future Earth Philippines.
