“Without women, no progress is possible”. Driven by this conviction, UNMUTE is a platform amplifying women’s voices who are shaping their future and the world. Because learning from their experiences can inspire us to act, and to speak up. In this first podcast, 20 young women tell us about what perseverance and determination means in science, and how they are committed to improving the lives of millions of people across Africa and the world. The editor Aline Afanoukoé talks to the winners of the 13th edition of the For Women in Science Young Talents Awards for Sub-Saharan Africa - a program led by the Fondation L’Oréal and UNESCO to promote and strengthen the role of women in science. These young women embody the continent’s diversity and demonstrate the potential of science to transform lives. Originaire du Bénin, Olyvia Gwladys Fadeyi est doctorante en monitoring et conservation de la biodiversité, spécialisée en mycologie tropicale. Ses recherches portent sur la promotion de l’autonomisation des femmes en milieu rural à travers la valorisation de champignons comestibles. Souvent découragée par le peu de soutien financier et l’insuffisant soutien mutuel entre la gente féminine et masculine en science, elle est convaincue qu’un meilleur équilibre entre les sexes permettrait de tirer le meilleur de chaque talent. «Les deux sexes ont leurs propres dons extraordinaires, uniques et spécifiques, ils devraient être valorisés de manière égale». In this episode Ruth Mwangi is interviewed by the editor Aline Afanoukoé. Ruth Mwangi is a doctoral student in Agricultural Sciences, specializing in agricultural and food biotechnology. She is studying the potential of endophytic (a class of endosymbiotic microbes with many practical applications) and botanical extracts in the management of post-harvest losses in tomatoes. She dreams of producing building panels using mushrooms as polystyrene foam. This simple technology would allow us to make affordable, sustainable, environmentally friendly and recyclable building materials from agricultural waste. Ruth believes that educating women in science will promote the continent’s economic development and eradicate poverty. Winifred Ayinpogbilla Atiah, originally from Ghana, is a postdoctoral fellow in earth and environmental sciences, specializing in meteorology and atmospheric sciences. Her study focuses on ‘seasonal flood forecasting in Ghana using a new climate indicator approach’. Flooding has a negative impact on rain-fed agriculture in Ghana. Floods drown crops, which eventually die, resulting in significant crop losses. To address this, Winifred Ayinpogbilla Atiah is developing a model that will allow an early forecasting of natural disasters such as floods. Born and based in Zimbabwe, Beauty Makamure is a Ph.D. student in health sciences and specializing in infectious diseases. Her research focuses on the use of whole genome sequencing for the rapid detection of drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) and identification of mutations presenting drug-resistant patterns. She is conducting her work in a low-income country, Zimbabwe, where there is little technology available and a high infection rate of TB. Inspired by female role models, friends and mentors, she believes that greater representation of female scientists is essential to encourage younger people to take an interest in the field. In this episode Bezalem Eshetu Yirdaw is interviewed by the editor Aline Afanoukoé. Bezalem Eshetu Yirdaw is an Ethiopian Ph.D. student in statistics, specializing in biostatistics. She is studying the multilevel Bayesian network (a network model that combines Bayesian networks and multilevel modeling) for hierarchical multiple outcome data, under the supervision of Professor Legesse Kassa Debusho. She wants to become an expert in her field of study and find new methods to develop Bayesian networks that can be applied in diverse fields, especially in health sciences. When she receives her Ph.D., she will be one of the first few female statisticians in her country, breaking the myth that her field of study is reserved for men. Elle étudie la faisabilité économique de la fabrication de produits biopolymères durables à partir de matériaux lignocellulosiques (fibres végétales) au sein du laboratoire de génie chimique à Maurice. Malgré les difficultés à trouver un stage à cause de son genre, elle a su faire preuve de détermination pour atteindre ses objectifs. Elle rêve aujourd’hui de faire de l’île Maurice, une île sans plastiques à travers la mise au point d’un biopolymère compostable, biocompatible, 100 % biosourcé et biodégradable.
