One of the 19th century’s most incredible tales of survival is the tragedy of the whaleship Essex. To this day, it is widely considered to be the most horrific voyage in the history of American whaling. And would achieve immortality by giving birth to one of the crown jewels of American literature - and becoming a testament to the endless capability of human endurance.
