En 2016, la France métropolitaine a été redécoupée en 13 régions au lieu de 22. Ce découpage a créé un certain nombre de conflits politiques et du mécontentement dans la population. Personne n’était d’accord sur les régions qui pouvaient être mises ensemble ou non. Pour mettre fin au débat, certains dessinateurs se sont amusés à proposer une solution toute simple : on découperait la France en deux, avec deux régions, Paris et la province. Mais qu’est-ce que la province ?

La province, c’est une façon de parler de tout le territoire français en dehors de la région parisienne. Souvent, on l’utilise pour faire des grandes généralités : déjà au 17ᵉ siècle, Molière se moquait des Provinciaux qui manqueraient d’éducation et d’élégance. Les Parisiens, quant à eux, sont fréquemment critiqués pour leur snobisme. Pourtant, la notion de parisien est très relative : d’après la Mairie de Paris, seuls 22% des habitants actuels de Paris sont nés dans cette ville. Et les grandes villes de Province ressemblent de plus en plus à Paris : on y trouve les mêmes magasins, on peut y avoir une vie culturelle développée et un bon emploi.

Paris-Province: is the match still on?

In 2016, metropolitan France was reorganized into 13 regions instead of 22. This division created a number of political conflicts and public discontent. Nobody agreed on which regions could be put together and which could not. To put an end to the debate, some cartoonists came up with a simple solution: France would be split in two, with two regions, Paris and the Province. But what is the Province?

Province is a way of referring to the whole of France outside the Paris region. It's often used to make sweeping generalizations: as far back as the 17th century, Molière mocked the "Provinciaux" for their lack of education and elegance. Parisians, meanwhile, are frequently criticized for their snobbery. Yet the notion of a Parisian is highly relative: according to the Paris City Council, only 22% of today's Parisians were born in the city. And the big cities in the Province are becoming more and more like Paris: you'll find the same stores, a well-developed cultural life and a good job.

So, Paris-Province: is the match still on? That's the question of the day in French Baratin!
