Throughout the 1990's, "Canada" had a major issue with serial killers; but this problem was especially amplified in British Columbia. These killers were specifically targeting Black and Indigenous female sex workers who worked and lived in the East Hastings area. Most have heard of Robert Pickton, but what most people are not aware is that there were many others who were also active at this time and remain free and possibly still killing up until this day. This case highlights the lack of care, consideration and protection given to sex workers in general but especially those who are Black and/or Indigenous. The Hemlock Valley Murderer is still out there to this day and the families of Tracy Olajide, Tammy Lee Pipe, Victoria Younker and Mary Lidguerre still have no answers as to what happened to their loved ones. The police, as usual, were absolutely ineffective at preventing this from occurring and have not been able to answer any questions about who may have done this despite having DNA evidence from the murderer in their custody for over 20 years at this point. This case has been cold, longer than I have been alive, and their families deserve closure and answers.
