We all create defensive patterns and behaviours as a way to protect ourselves from perceived threats or emotional pain. These defences may include behaviours such as avoidance, denial, blame, or withdrawal. While these defences may provide temporary relief, over time, they can limit a person's ability to fully engage with the world and reach their potential. One reason people create defensive patterns is because they may have experienced emotional trauma or difficult life experiences that have left them feeling vulnerable or overwhelmed. To cope with these feelings, they may develop defensive behaviours as a way to shield themselves from future harm. However, these defensive patterns can become ingrained and automatic, preventing individuals from fully experiencing life and reaching their potential. For example, if someone has a fear of failure, they may avoid trying new things or taking risks, which can limit their personal and professional growth.

To overcome these limitations, individuals may need to identify their defensive patterns and work with therapist to heal these imbalances and to develop more adaptive coping strategies. Practicing mindfulness and self-awareness to identify when they are engaging in defensive behaviours can help to be more present and authentic. By doing so, individuals can create more meaningful and fulfilling lives, both personally and professionally.
