Why Does Purging Stuff Feel So Good
There is something about the word "purge." It is pretty powerful and descriptive, don't you think? I have been purging since before the new year. I can not seem to stop getting rid of stuff. It feels so good. I got to thinking, "Why does purging your stuff feel so good?"
In this podcast episode, I share my research on why purging may feel so great.
I introduce a book, Does This Clutter Make My Butt Look Fat by Mr Peter Walsh. Published in 2009, the book posits that Clutter can actual make you gain weight. Mr Walsh may be on to something.
I also found a great article in Psychology Today titled, "The Powerful Psychology Behind Cleanliness" by Ralph Ryback MD. Dr Ryback explains that yes, clutter can affect your brain and the clearing of clutter can indeed make you happier...I knew it...listen to find out how it works.
Finally, I ask organization expert and author, Laurie Palau, author of Hot Mess: A Practical Guide to Getting Organized to explain why we desire to purge and how to get started.
Laurie shares the 3 steps to get you started:

  1. Start Small
  2. Do your ESP - Empty, Sort, Purge
  3. Sort Your Piles - Keep, Donate, Recycle and Relocate

You can find Laurie at her website SimplyBOrganized.
I also mention Deb Lillard's book on organizing "Absolutely Organized"
Why do you like to purge your stuff? Any good tips?
Another treat: In Dr Ryback's Psychology Today article he mentions a website with a bad name but it is so creative and helpful I feel I must mention it here in the show notes. It's called UnF***YourHabitat. Too good not to share!
