4:02 Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by the Borrelia species of spirochete bacteria and transmitted by the bite of a deer tick. Back in the 1970s there were a rash of kids suffering with arthritic conditions, so they started to send blood samples in the NIH, where a researcher, Willie Bergdorfer discovered the Borrelia bacteria that was causing these symptoms, so they named this species Borrelia Bergdorferi.
