At one point or another, almost every yoga teacher I know has thought “Am I really a contractor, or… am I an employee?” The answer to that question has big implications - things like your working rights, superannuation (RRSP/401k), holiday pay…it can even affect your ability to work for multiple studios, or run your own business. And if you're a studio owner, getting this question wrong can lead to some pretty big consequences. However, it’s a grey area, and one that the yoga industry has largely swept under the rug, at least as far as I can tell.
That’s why, in my mind, it’s a very important question to ask, and also one that needs a clear answer. And in today's interview, Cory Sterling (a practicing lawyer, and owner of the law firm Conscious Counsel) gives us a clear path forward to address this issue as an industry. So if you’re a teacher, or studio owner, this is one episode you don’t want to miss!
